Phase 4 Standard Classes (11)
December 5, 2025
9:00AM - 1:30PM PST
Phase 4: Releases for the Ribs
Melissa Malm
Ashland, OR
|
Ortho-Bionomy® uses osteopathic-based, gentle, comfortable body positions and movements to stimulate self-correcting reflexes within the muscles and nerves. This method is specific and structure oriented. The techniques of this foundation class can alleviate tension patterns of the ribs within 10-30 seconds. It is easy on the practitioner and can be integrated into any massage or bodywork session. Included in the class tuition is access to a pre-requisite online video with necessary information about Ortho-Bionomy, so that we can spend more class time doing hands on work. If you have recently taken an Ortho-Bionomy class this requirement may be waived, please ask for more details. The Releases for the Ribs 4 hour class will include hands on techniques for the General Ribs, Specific Ribs, and the Intercostal Muscles. This class can be taken as a stand-alone class, or to complement any other Phase 4 class. This class is NCBTMB approved. This four hour “mini class” can be used for Phase 4 requirements for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International® Associate and Practitioner training programs. |

Phase 4: Ortho-Bionomy® Fundamentals for Spine and Pelvis
Morel Stackhouse
Cottage Grove, WI and Zoom
|
This course covers the history, philosophy and basic concepts of Ortho-Bionomy. In this class you will observe and practice specific techniques for releasing imbalances in the neck, thoracic spine and ribcage, lumbar spine, pelvic girdle and sacrum. These techniques result in the release of pain and neuromuscular tension patterns, promoting expanded range of motion, increased circulation and a greater sense of well-being. Ortho-Bionomy techniques are highly effective, easy to learn, easy on your body, and combine well with other bodywork and complimentary healing systems. You will discover ways to: Help relieve pain gently, without causing pain Work with common problems such as whiplash injuries, low back pain, and sciatica Release sensitive (trigger) points with little or no effort Experience and understand the natural reflexes in the body Develop your sensitivity to the subtle, structural changes that promote healing |

Phase 4: Extremities
Karen Elisa Broyles supervised by Jessica Mark
St Louis, MO
The beauty of working with the extremities is that they are often the most comforting and easily accessible point of contact. There is almost no setting where you cannot do simple, profound work by simply holding someone's hand, or beginning at their feet.
Students will learn how to use gentle, position-based techniques to stimulate the body's self-corrective reflexes for the upper and lower extremities. This includes specific releases for joints like the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand, as well as the knee, ankle, and foot. The goal is to reduce muscle tension and stress, improve range of motion, and help the body achieve greater structural alignment and balance.
This is an entry-level course, no previous experience required.

Phase 4: Fundamentals Spine & Pelvis
Lynne Marotta
Stamford, CT
|
This foundation class covers the history, philosophy, and concepts of Ortho-Bionomy and provides an overview of the basic release techniques and anatomy for each major joint in the body. Movements and positions of comfort are demonstrated to facilitate the release of muscular tension and overall stress by stimulating the inherent, self-corrective reflexes of the body, which help create structural alignment and balance from within. This course is typically taught for specific body areas/anatomy, such as spine, extremities, thoracics, etc. to break the coursework into more manageable sections. Dr. Arthur Lincoln Pauls, the founder of Ortho-Bionomy, organized his work into Phases Four, Five, Six and Seven, with the foundation work beginning with Phase Four. This is covered in the Phase Four course. |

Phase Five and the Reflexes
Luann Overmyer with Liz Olivas Co-Teaching
Boca Raton, FL
|
Phase 5 Ortho-Bionomy is about having a conversation with the tissue, not an argument. The focus of Phase Five is to move to a more subtle level of awareness of the practice and principle of Ortho-Bionomy®. Specific techniques develop and increase the student's understanding and proprioceptive sensitivity to the self-corrective movements initiated by the client. Through the practice of observing, following and supporting subtle movement patterns, muscular tension is released, range of motion may be increased and pain may be reduced. The gentle and subtle approach of this work is especially appropriate for releasing severe, acute pain and chronic patterning, This class presents practical, gentle release techniques can seem almost magical in their effectiveness. Releases for psoas, pelvis, lumbars, coccyx, neck, shoulders, clavicle, ears, eyes, jaw and more will be presented and practiced. Phase 6; Advanced Energy Releases
Jim Berns
San Francisco, CA
|
We are more than our muscles and bones. We are our energy, emotions, and all the experiences that have led us to this moment. How would it feel to have your clients connect with all of who they are? This Ortho-Bionomy class provides you with the awareness that all around our bones, muscles, and organs there is energy. When we make contact with this energy, we allow the body to be deeply recognized, self-correct, and to respond at a more profound level. You will learn specific touch and energetic skills that can take any healing modality that you use to a deeper and more profound level. This class can significantly increase your sensitivity and ability to connect and work with your clients on both physical and energetic levels. |

This class is designed to help participants access and track sensations and energetic perceptions in themselves and their clients. We'll practice how to make contact without necessarily engaging physically. Techniques will be presented and practiced that acknowledge and monitor the inter-relationship between energetic and physical levels and that demonstrate how energetic shifts can affect changes in physical patterns. Being in a Phase 6 relationship is another way to have a dialogue that facilitates healing. |

Phase 6
Luann Overmyer
Boca Raton, FL
|
This class heightens our sensitivity and awareness to energetic relationship. The techniques clarify the effects of interactions within the auric field that promote a natural return to physical, mental and emotional well-being. Students learn to notice and identify energetic shifts within themselves and others, and to model that capacity. They learn the value of "not doing" as the practitioner steps back to allow the client's self-healing capacities to engage. The concepts of alignment and attunement, holding space, interrupting patterns, and offering options will be explored as they relate to the natural reflexive responses of rebound, recoil, remembered emotional response, follow on response, and ongoing action. |

Indianapolis, IN
|
Phase 6 is an Energetic Application of the Principles, Techniques, and Practices we have learned in Phase 4 and Phase 5 Ortho-Bionomy Classes. In Phase 6, we primarily work with the Etheric Body, Aura, Subtle Bodies or Energy Field of the client. Any of these terms can be used interchangeable, based on your background and exposure to what is commonly termed “Energy Work”. At times, we will have our hands on our client’s physical body, but most of the interface occurs off the body. |

December 6 - 7, 2025
Isometric and Isotonics
Lynne Marotta
Stamford, CT or Zoom
This class presents isometric and isotonic techniques, including related anatomy, for working with inefficient muscular tension patterns as well as underdeveloped muscle tone.
Through the use of restraining movement while the muscle is engaged, self-correcting reflexes are stimulated and habitual holding patterns can be released.
Participants learn how the conscious use of obstacles can help promote change from rigid physical patterns to greater mobility while allowing the client to actively participate in the session.

Isometric and Isotonics
Erin Long
Nashville, TN
|
Isometric and isotonic techniques offer the opportunity to work with inefficient muscular tension patterns, tone muscle tissue that has become flaccid, and smooth out any bumps or jittery grabs within the muscle spindles. By restraining movement or toning through movement while a muscle is engaged, we stimulate the nervous system and reciprocal inhibition, cue the self-correcting reflexes into action, and greater balance between opposing muscles or muscle groups is encouraged. The process is remarkably quick, 8-10 seconds, and offers us a powerful tool to open stuck or contracted areas that do not respond to other techniques. The client is an active participant in this process, bringing self-awareness and recognition of the work. In this class isometric and isotonic exercises will be taught and practiced offering relief from chronic pain, rigid muscle patterns, postural imbalances, and more. |

Isometric and Isotonics
Shaney Rockefeller
TBD, UT
|
Using Isometric and Isotonic resistance techniques encourages mobility and helps releases happen more readily in the body. By enlisting the participation of a client, these techniques can assist the self-correction of postural imbalances and chronic tension patterns. These techniques consist of slight restraint against a gently engaged muscle followed by the completion of the movement. As a practitioner, you can facilitate relaxing tense muscle patterns while encouraging toning of other muscles. In this class, participants learn how the use of gentle resistance exercises with the client can help promote change from rigid patterns in the muscles and joints to greater mobility. |

Isometric and Isotonics
Keri Brown
Indianapolis, IN
|
This class presents isometric and isotonic techniques, including related anatomy, for working with inefficient muscular tension patterns as well as underdeveloped muscle tone. Through the use of restraining movement while the muscle is engaged, self-correcting reflexes are stimulated and habitual holding patterns can be released. Participants learn how the conscious use of obstacles can help promote change from rigid physical patterns to greater mobility while allowing the client to actively participate in the session. |

Participants will clarify personal values concerning their work philosophy, and define their scope of practice. We will also discuss techniques designed to contain and guide emotional release and expression so the practitioner and the client are both comfortable and safe. Demonstration Skills
Jim Berns and Melissa Malm
Ashland, OR
Every time you talk about Ortho-Bionomy, whether you are interacting with a client, someone you meet, or a friend, you are presenting yourself professionally and giving an “introductory talk.” Your feelings and excitement about Ortho-Bionomy come across in your words, energy, and body language.
To help you clearly and easily communicate about Ortho-Bionomy, this class will help you clarify:
~ What is Ortho-Bionomy?
~ What does an Ortho-Bionomy session look like?
~ How does Ortho-Bionomy feel?
~ What are the benefits of getting an Ortho-Bionomy session?
This Demonstration Skills Class will give you the confidence, knowledge, and experience to embody “being” Ortho-Bionomy, not just talking about it. Students will practice together in a safe, open, and supportive atmosphere. Whether you are a beginning student or finishing your practitioner program, this class can be an incredible experience!
This class is NCBTMB approved as a business/marketing class.
Pre-requisite: Enrolled in the Practitioner Training Program and have an Advisor. Completed the Associate Membership level or Advisor/Instructor recommendation.
This class is a requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International’s Practitioner Training Program.

ONLINE
May 7, 21, June 4, 18, July 9, 23, August 6, 27 (Thursdays)
9am-1:30pm pacific, 10am-2:30pm mountain, 11am-3:30pm central, 12pm-4:30pm eastern
This class uses anatomy images, movement, and hands-on palpation to explore anatomical language and experience all the major bones and muscles of the human body in a way that is immediately and practically useful for bodywork practitioners.
I absolutely love studying the anatomy of the human body and can’t wait to share my passion for this with you!
Rather than rote memorization, emphasis will be placed on feeling the anatomy of our own body and our palpation partner, and on being comfortable with how to look up anatomical information in reference materials as needed.
This anatomy course is perfect for students starting out in their bodywork training, for laypeople who want to know more about the anatomy of the human body as they work with friends and family, or for students at any level who would like to review and renew their anatomy knowledge.
This 32-hour online course will be presented in eight 4 hour “bite-sized” classes, with a half hour break about halfway through the day. For more thorough kinesthetic understanding of the material presented, you will need a palpation partner most days of class.*
You will have the opportunity to spend some time outside class coloring images and doing other explorations that facilitate your learning process. The 2-3 week interval between each class will allow time for you to practice anatomical palpation with friends and family and for the information to integrate into your system between classes.
If you have any questions about the contents of this course or wish to discuss the requirements and how they relate to your specific situation, please text 415.595.0328 so we can set up a time to talk further about how this course can meet your needs.
This course fulfills SOBI’s 32-hour anatomy requirement for the Practitioner Training Program.
*Contact me for more information about palpation partner requirements. The partner does not have to be the same person for each class.

Anatomy and Physiology 8 of 8

Ortho-Bionomy Releases for the Breath
Jim Berns and Melissa Malm Co-Teaching
Corvalis, OR
Breath is life. Each breath we take is a picture of who we have been, who we are, and who we yearn to be. Using osteopathic-based principles of Ortho-Bionomy, in this hands-on training we will:
· Recognize restrictions of the breath and offer it new options
· Bring awareness to the connections between the breath and other parts of the body
· Explore the possibilities of where the breath can lead us
· Use painless comfortable positions to release tension patterns in the structure associated with the breath.
It is amazing how such gentle techniques can give such deep releases. Ortho-Bionomy is easy on the practitioner and can easily be integrated into any massage or bodywork session. Ortho-Bionomy uses gentle painless positions and movements to allow the body to self-correct back to balance and ease. It is easy on the practitioner to do and comforting for the client to receive.
This class is NCBTMB approved, course# 70334152 (Jim Berns) This class can fulfill an elective requirement for the Society of Ortho-Bionomy International’s Associate, Practitioner, and Advanced Practitioner training programs.

Ortho-Bionomy® Approach: Post Breast Cancer Mastectomy/Lumpectomy/Radiation The noninvasive nature of Ortho-Bionomy® allows it to be a perfect post-treatment. We do not increase circulation, increase pain to reduce it or move the body into painful positions. In my office I have been able to follow people after cancer treatment for over 33 years. It is interesting to note that most of my clients have progressed to a functional full life. Some clients have long term effects of chemo and radiation. This study group will focus on the effects of Cancer treatments, and how we can best improve the quality of the client’s life with an Ortho-Bionomy® approach to aftercare. Study Group: Jaw and Tongue Self Help Study Group
Cynthia Wood
Zoom
In this Study Group we will explore ways to work with the tongue and jaw on ourselves. We will go over anatomy to clarify muscular attachments and innate relationships. We will see how working with the jaw and the tongue- while including the pelvis, neck and other structures leads to more integrated and lasting release.
This will give you tools for working with yourself as well as a deeper understanding which you can apply in your practice. Incorporating work with the jaw and the tongue can be especially helpful addressing TMJ joint disfunction, whiplash, sinus issues, neck pain and more. Plus it is quick and deeply relaxing.
|

Study Group: Ortho-Bionomy® Post Mastectomy& Radiation Approach
Liz Olivas
Zoom
|
Anatomy and Physiology 1 of 8
Melissa Malm

Anatomy and Physiology 6 of 8
Melissa Malm

Residential (5)
May 10 - 16, 2026
Residential
Luann Overmyer
Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia
Our aim with this Residential experience is to provide an opportunity for participants to immerse in Ortho-Bionomy learning and practice, and experience personal growth in their own unique way.
The Hervey Bay area, and its surrounds, provide a lovely part of the world for this experience. Imagine yourself there by the sea, sharing and learning with members of the Australian Ortho-Bionomy community.
Residential training programs provide participants with the opportunity to broaden and deepen their understanding of Ortho-Bionomy techniques and principles through an in-depth immersion for five or more days of uninterrupted study. Residentials allow time for learning and personal growth as well as relaxation to facilitate the integration of technique, philosophy and the qualities of "being" rather than “doing".
